Bring your laptop, grab your favorite drink and settle in for a study session, a little people watching or a much-needed break from campus.
You might find your new favorite place to knock out a paper, meet up with friends or recover from that 8 a.m. class.
2. Take a Break at Sunken Gardens
Need to get out of your dorm or apartment for a minute? Head to Sunken Gardens.
This 1.5-acre botanical oasis is one of Lincoln's prettiest spots, and it's completely free to visit. Take a walk through the gardens, snap some photos, bring a friend or just enjoy a little quiet time away from campus.
It's the perfect place for a study break, a casual hangout or a quick reset when you've been staring at your laptop for way too long.
3. Find Your New Favorite Trail
You don't have to go far to get outside in Lincoln.
With more than 185 miles of interconnected trails, LNK has plenty of places to walk, bike, run or explore with friends. Pick a trail you've never tried, make a playlist, grab a coffee or snack and go see where it takes you.

4. Finally Go Inside the Nebraska State Capitol
You've probably driven past it. You've probably taken a picture of it. But have you actually been inside?
The Nebraska State Capitol is free to visit and is definitely worth checking out, especially if you're new to Lincoln. Explore the incredible architecture, learn a little about Nebraska and head up for views of the city.
It's also an easy stop to add when your friends or family visit. Consider it your official "I'm showing you around my new city" activity.
5. Make a Stop at Sheldon
Located right on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's City Campus, the Sheldon Museum of Art is an easy place to explore when you want to do something a little different.
Admission is free, and the museum features an impressive collection of American art along with an outdoor sculpture garden. Spend 20 minutes between classes or turn it into a longer afternoon with a friend.
It's low-key, free and a pretty good way to switch up your usual campus routine.
6. Check Out the International Quilt Museum
Hear us out. The International Quilt Museum is way cooler than the name might suggest.
Located near UNL's East Campus, the museum features colorful, ever-changing exhibitions showcasing quilts and textiles from around the world. UNL students and staff get in free, making it an easy way to explore something new without spending much.
It's also a great rainy-day activity when Nebraska weather decides to do its thing, or a fun place to wander when you need a break from studying.
7. Find Some Free Live Music
Your weekend plans don't have to come with a $50 ticket.
Lincoln has free live music happening throughout the year, from outdoor concert series and community events to local bands playing all around town. Grab your friends and make a night of it.
Add some snacks, a sunset, and your favorite people, and you've basically built your own mini music festival.

8. Spend a Saturday in the Haymarket
You don't need a big budget or a full itinerary to have a good time in the Historic Haymarket.
Start your Saturday at the Historic Haymarket Farmers' Market, grab a coffee or snack, wander through the brick streets, check out local shops and do some serious people watching. Bring your camera, meet up with friends and see where the day takes you.
And if you have a little room in the budget, split a treat with a friend. Everything tastes better when someone else is paying half.
9. Look Up at Hyde Observatory or Branched Oak Observatory
Forget Netflix for one night. Look up.
Head to Holmes Lake Park and check out Hyde Observatory, where you can explore the night sky through high-powered telescopes. The observatory is operated by volunteers and offers a completely different way to spend an evening in Lincoln.
If you want to head away from the bright city lights, venture northwest of Lincoln to Branched Oak Observatory near Raymond to check out the cosmos. They offer community astronomy programs and feature watch parties and other celestial gatherings.
Bring a blanket, your friends and a few snacks, then see what you can spot in the sky. It's free, it's easy, and it's a pretty great low-key date idea, too.
10. Make Your Own LNK Adventure
Sometimes the best way to explore a new city is to have absolutely no plan.
Pick a neighborhood you've never visited. Find a mural. Try a new coffee shop. Walk somewhere you've never been. Pack a picnic. Browse a local market. Take photos downtown. Find a new study spot. Explore a part of campus you've somehow never seen.
Make a list of places you've been wanting to check out and start crossing them off. Or pick a random part of town and see what you find.
Lincoln is full of little places, local favorites, and unexpected spots to discover, and you don't have to spend a lot of money to find your next favorite place.
So, get off campus, try somewhere new, say yes to the random group chat plans, and start making LNK your own. Your new favorite coffee shop, study spot, trail, concert, or weekend hangout could be just around the corner.
