The original plan for the Capitol included the broad avenues that lead in all directions of the building. Facing the West entrance of the Capitol at the opposite end of Lincoln Mall is a bronze statue of a young Abraham Lincoln. "The Rail Joiner" welcomes visitors to the Justice and Law Enforcement Center at 575 S. 10th Street. The original was sculpted by Louis Slobodkin, completed in the 1930's and is displayed at the Department of the Interior in Washington D.C.. The Sheldon Museum of Art received a plaster cast of the sculpture and the right to reproduce it. A community-wide effort, including "Pennies for Lincoln" campaign by Lincoln school children, funded the placement of the statue.
