The Norman A Geske Cinema Showcase presents filmmaker Brigitte Timmerman and Fluent speaking elders Octa Keen and Glenna Slater who will appear for Q+As with the audience following free screenings of UMONHON IYE THE OMAHA SPEAKING on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Only a handful of Native American fluent speakers remain of the Omaha Tribe. Fluent speaking elders reflect on growing up speaking their native language, the efforts that was taken from outsiders to phase it out and why it is so important to preserve it. Hopefulness is expressed by the elders and a dedicated group of educators attempts to keep their language alive. Brigitte Timmerman is President of the Nebraska Film Association who advocates for filmmaking in the state of Nebraska. Brigitte received her groundwork in filmmaking as a member of Chicago Filmmakers Coop. During her membership at Chicago Filmmakers, she focused on documentaries. While there, she was instructed and influenced by many talented Academy Award Nominated and Emmy award-winning filmmakers. Brigitte herself is an award-winning filmmaker with honors in the Best Documentary category at the 2018 Red Nation International Film Festival and The National Cowboy and Heritage Museum 2019 Heritage Awards with her latest feature length documentary UmoNhoN Iye The Omaha Speaking. UmoNhoN Iye The Omaha Speaking is about the handful of fluent speakers that remain of the tribe and educators dedicated efforts to revive their language. Brigitte’s recent short documentary Sandhills Cowboy is about a working cowboy and poet who runs a ranch in Cody, Nebraska. Brigitte’s films have been accepted into several film festivals including American Indian Film Festival, WINNER at Red National International Film Festival, Awareness Film Festival, Mammoth Film Festival, Omaha Film Festival, Sandy Dennis Film Festival, The Wild Bunch Film Festival and White Light City Film Festival. Brigitte lives in Omaha, Nebraska and frequents her family’s ranches in the Sandhills of Nebraska and South Dakota which keep her grounded.
