Led by a stellar performance from Mark Rylance, opening at The Ross on Friday, June 24, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN turns a stranger-than-fiction true story into crowd-pleasing entertainment. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN is a rousing salute to a very English strain of nincompoopery - and a wise and witty reminder that that the pleasure of doing something spectacularly badly can outstrip the satisfaction of a job well done. –Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK) This underdog golf biopic sometimes swings and whiffs with its hyper-quirky styling, but a bright script and game performances see it through. –Guy Lodge, Variety An amiable little picture which might be dramatically as flat as Mark Rylance's vowels but still packs a considerable helping of crowd-pleasing charm into its cap and golfing slacks. –Wendy Ide, Screen International THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN is showing at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center on Friday, June 24 through Thursday, July 7. Show times are available at, by consulting your newspaper, or by calling the MRRMAC film information line at 402.472.5353. The Motion Picture Association has rated THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN PG-13 (Smoking|Some Strong Language). THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN tells the heartwarming true story of Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a dreamer and unrelenting optimist. This humble crane operator from Barrow-in-Furness managed to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship qualifying in 1976, despite never playing a round of golf before. He shot the worst round in Open history and drew the ire of the golfing elite, but became a folk hero in the process and, more importantly, showed his family the importance of pursuing your dreams.
